Q fan control pwm or dc

When putting HIGH on the port the fan works perfectly at high speed, but when I want to lower the speed (say analogWrite(fanPin, 150)) it starts to make a humming noise. I believe this is caused by the use of PWM. What is the best way to control the speed of the fan without (too much) noise? ps. The fan is a Cooler Master 3-wire PC fan.
CCMFC DC Motor Speed Controller provides variable speed capability for brush or brushless DC fans, or the fans without control line. Input voltage: 12VDC Suitable for the DC fan within 1A, Peak current 2A. Low noise, small size. Operating instruction: Before you attempting to wire the controller, make sure power is off. PWM fans will adjust the RPM depending on the PWM signal that your motherboard sends. I don't think many people use PWM case fans. There are not even that many PWM case fans on the market. Most motherboards have automatic fan control built in anyways, so you get nearly the same effect without the expense of PWM fans. IMO, worthless for case fans. The speed of dc motor can be controller in many ways like we can add a variable resistor in series with the motor but we will control the speed of dc motor using the l298 motor controller by the PWM (pulse width modulation) method which is efficient than the other methods.

Jan 22, 2011 · No yours is the new Q-Fan. The old one would tie all the 3 pin fan headers (except the psu one) to one setting and you got three choices: standard, turbo, and silent. The cpu had the same kind of settings but it was only for itself and as far as I know only works with 4 pin pwm fans. They're not like brushed DC motors which wouldn't care. There's a control circuitry inside for switching the windings in just the right sequence which needs DC. Either use the fans of the special PWM-controlled type with four wires (DC power, tachometer, PWM control input, GND) or provide actual variable DC.

cSoC an ideal choice for DC fan speed monitoring and control applications. This application note is intended to highlight the uni que features of SmartFusion cSoCs in demonstrating how to control different types of DC fans. Using this application note you can control 2-, 3-, and 4-wire fans. If you MUST control the DC voltage, then I'd suggest you do not use PWM, and be aware that the range of control is non-linear, and restricted. Most fans show DC control limited to about 5V DC on a 12V fan. You might also read this question which covered PWM of a fan for non-computer use.

This PWM controller is cheap and easy to build, but has no temperature control and with components shown runs at relatively low frequency. See my AVR micro based PWM controller for better alternative that has temperature sensing, much higher frequency, and uses less components. Jan 17, 2011 · So, PWM speed control of a standard fan is indeed very different from PWM speed control of a PWM fan… Nidec even goes so far as to say that modulating the main supply voltage is not advisable: Pulse-width modulation of DC operating voltage to modify fan speed is not recommended. www.de.comp.hardware.kuehlung-laermdaemmung.narkive.com
